Can you put SEKTION doors on AKURUM cabinets?

The second is hardware: per the same Swedish Door Co. post, the mounting plates for SEKTION hinges don't match the holes in AKURUM boxes. Semihandmade describes AKURUM as a single line of holes with a butterfly-shaped hinge, versus two sets of vertical holes and a two-piece hinge on SEKTION. One owner in that thread reports the new hinge's alignment pegs were wider than the old holes, so they had to drill new ones. The third is the boxes themselves: the two lines were sized on different grids, so cabinet heights and depths don't line up one to one. Measure your own cabinets rather than trusting a size chart.

Kokeena, another door maker, notes that its AKURUM-era reference doors were 5/8 inch thick, and that SEKTION cabinets come in 5-inch increments while AKURUM sizing doesn't follow that pattern. Treat the practical takeaway as firm and the individual numbers as vendor-reported: a SEKTION door will not line up on an AKURUM box, and drilling new hinge holes to force it is a workaround owners describe, not something IKEA supports.

• Keep the boxes and order doors made for AKURUM. IKEA no longer sells replacement AKURUM parts, but Semihandmade says it services IKEA kitchens back to 2003 and keeps your boxes, drawer units, internal hardware and hinges. Wood-tone slab doors mostly disappear into the room, since there's no contrast between the door and the frame around it. The green Shaker door with brass pulls does the opposite: the frame lines and the hardware both read clearly, so the kitchen looks more deliberately designed even though the box behind it hasn't changed at all. Hardware is the part people underspend on relative to its effect. New pulls change a door's visual weight more than a shade of paint does, but there's a practical catch: if new doors aren't pre-drilled for your existing pull spacing, you'll need matching pre-drilled doors or new holes, and covering old holes on a kept door is harder than starting clean. Can you paint your IKEA doors instead?

Yes, and it's the cheapest of the four options above, but IKEA's laminate surfaces need more prep than raw wood would. Most laminate doors need degreasing, a light sanding for the paint to grip, and a bonding primer made for slick surfaces rather than a standard wall primer, followed by two to three coats with light sanding between them.
